Summer Movies
Posted by Jimmy T on June 30, 2008
Hey there. I’m glad to see that you folks are finding the site ok. If you notice that someone is missing, let them know the way. I’ll do the same.
So, movies. Man, there are a ton of great movies coming out. I know some of you are avid movie fans, while others, like me, are not so much. But this Summer looks to be promising. I never watch movies, yet within the past two months, I’ve seen five. In no particular order, they are: Harold and Kumar:Escape… , Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Indiana Jones, and Wall-E.
I can easily recommend Wall-E for the entire family, and I mean the entire family. Pixar has a knack for doing a show that will entertain across the spectrum of generations. I’m sure that some of you animation fanatics already saw it on opening day. I won’t give away the plot, but this movie will make you think. After the warm fuzzies of this movie have faded away, it will make you consider the deeper meanings and symbolism of the movie. You’ll appreciate the irony of human/robot interactions. Hell, it might just make you appreciate your high school English teacher for trying to teach you some of these concepts! haha
For the comic fans, there’s Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. I think that Iron Man was the stronger movie of the two. Honestly as I was watching this, I felt like a kid watching Star Wars for the first time. It was a lot of fun. My wife would argue that Hulk was the better movie, but between you and me, I think she likes seeing all of those muscles bursting out of their clothing confines. I know this because I heard her wonder aloud why his pants always remain intact. Hm.
Also, the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, is coming soon and looks to be especially good, despite all of the Heath Ledger hype. Hellboy II looks like a good movie, and I was really surprised by the quality of the story and effects of the first one. Last but not least, Hancock is the new Will Smith, anti-hero movie, where he plays a super being with issues. Speaking of superheroes with issues, does anyone remember Mystery Men ? Hey, it made me laugh!
Indiana Jones movies are always good. This one has a strange resolution regarding the crystal skulls, but you’ll probably enjoy it. If you haven’t seen it, give it a try. Despite the odds, Indy always seems to pull through in the end, hat intact. Or does he?
As for Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, it’s an acquired taste. Ask yourself this. Do you:
- regularly laugh at Beavis and Butthead?
- think American Pie (the first one) was one of the funniest movies ever?
- think it would be cool if Neil Patrick Harris rode a unicorn?
- involuntarily laugh at fart jokes (or the real thing for that matter)?
- listen to Howard Stern?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, there’s a good chance that you might enjoy this movie.
Anyway, there are way too many movies to talk about and not enough time. What else is new, right? Maybe we’ll continue this movie discussion as more movies come out and people look for good entertainment ideas during the hot Summer season. Stay cool…wherever you are.
Comments? Fire away!

Hancock – I definitley want to see that. I’m sure I’ll have to wait until it comes out on DVD, but I might get lucky.

WALL-E was a great show. Me and my two little ones went to see it while the two older ones were swimming. Well, they were swimming until it started to rain and had to get out. Ha, they should have chosen to hang with the old man instead of going to the pool. Anyway, we have also seen The Hulk. I reminded me of the tv show. I would type more but I have to get up in a little bit.

One other thing that I forgot to mention was the great animated short at the beginning of Wall-E. This is nothing unusual for Pixar; they always have a short feature before the movie. However, this one was a little different.
It reminded me of the old Disney/Warner Bros. cartoons that they used to show in the theaters well before our time. Lots of slapstick humor, a rabbit, and the pursuit of a carrot. We grew up on those old cartoons, so I think you’ll like it.

The new Indiana Jones movie sucked balls! It was like X Files meets Indiana Jones. Booo Hiss!

Tracy, you say “X-Files meets Indiana Jones” like it’s a bad thing. Any “Scully” fans around here? Come on!
Well, I don’t want to say too much about the movie, but I’d say Tracy’s description is pretty accurate. Still I don’t think that should dissuade people.

Dissuade – when I get rich I am going to redo my couch in that dissuade material I been hearin bout.

I’ve only seen two movies so far this summer. The Sunday following the reunion was not a good day for me (and I venture to say a few others of us as well). Kim, Misty and I finally showered and made a plan to go catch a movie. We went to the theatre and tried to get tickets to a show (I forget which one); the A/C was broken in that theatre. We tried for another movie. Again, the A/C was not working. Considering the amount of alcohol that was still being processed in my system, I was NOT going to “sweat it out” in the theatre. We finally decided on The Happening. I love M. Night Shayamalan movies, so how could we go wrong? HA! It was so predictible. They tell you what the “hook” is less than 20 minutes into the movie. And all the scenes that should have been suspenseful were long and drawn out so you knew what was coming…for like 4 minutes. This, in my humble opinion, was not the movie it should have been. But, what do I know?
The second one was much better…if you like Mike Meyers. Love Guru was fairly entertaining. I had forgotten that Mr. Meyers is from Canada until the Canadian with whom I watched this movie let me in on some of the inside stuff I would never have caught on to. Stupid? Yes. Funny? Yes. All in all, money much better spent than the first movie.
As for the Indiana Jones movie, Misty saw it and told me the exact same thing about the X-Files; although she said it like it was a good thing.
